Compacted Soil: Why Your Potting Mix Is Suffocating Your Plant

Healthy potting mix is light, crumbly, and full of tiny air pockets that roots navigate easily. Over time, though, organic matter breaks down, particles compress under their own weight, and the mix transforms into something closer to hardened clay. Water pours straight down the gap between the soil and the pot wall, barely wetting the root zone at all — so even a freshly watered plant can be quietly dying of thirst.
