Fungus gnats are a frustratingly common houseplant pest, but the little flies hovering around your pots are actually the least of your worries. It's their larvae — tiny, thread-like white worms living in the top two inches of moist soil — that cause real harm by chewing through fine root hairs and even tunneling into thicker roots. Most healthy, established plants can tolerate a light infestation with minimal visible damage. But seedlings, recently repotted plants, or any specimen that's already stressed can decline noticeably: growth stalls, leaves yellow, and the plant wilts even when the soil is adequately moist.

The adult gnats you see are drawn to consistently damp potting mix, where females lay hundreds of eggs in a single lifetime. Peat-heavy mixes and any soil kept perpetually wet are especially inviting. Breaking that cycle means addressing both the larvae in the soil and the egg-laying adults above it — and, almost always, revisiting your watering habits.

Signs to look for

  • Small, dark-winged flies (roughly 1/8 inch long) hovering near the soil surface or congregating on nearby windowsills

What causes it

Chronically moist soil

Fungus gnat females require damp conditions to lay eggs successfully. Soil that stays wet for more than a few days at a time — whether from overwatering, poor drainage, or a very dense potting mix — creates an ideal nursery. The larvae need moisture to survive; in dry soil they desiccate and die within hours.

Peat- or coir-heavy potting mixes

Standard all-purpose potting mixes are often rich in peat moss or coconut coir, both of which retain moisture and decompose slowly. Decomposing organic matter is a primary food source for fungus gnat larvae, so these mixes are inherently more hospitable than coarser, mineral-heavy blends.

Bringing infested material indoors

Gnats frequently arrive on plants purchased from garden centers or grocery stores, in bags of potting mix stored outdoors, or on plants that summered outside on a porch or balcony. Even one infested plant can seed an entire collection because adults fly freely between pots.

Lack of soil dry-down between waterings

In low-light indoor conditions, especially in winter, soil can stay moist for a week or more after watering. Plants that need bright light but are placed in dim spots use less water, leaving the soil damp far longer than usual — perfect conditions for multiple gnat generations to complete their life cycle.

How to fix it

    Allow the top two inches of soil to dry out completely between waterings. Fungus gnat larvae cannot survive in dry soil, so consistent dry-downs break the reproductive cycle faster than almost any other single action. FAQ

Are the tiny flies themselves hurting my plant, or is it something else?

The adult flies are mostly a nuisance — they don't bite, sting, or feed on plant tissue. The damage is done entirely by the larvae underground. Adults do spread the infestation by flying to other pots to lay eggs, so reducing their numbers matters, but killing larvae and drying out the soil is what actually saves the plant.

How long does it take to get rid of a fungus gnat infestation?

With consistent Bti drenches every seven to ten days and improved watering habits, most infestations are under control within three to four weeks. Fungus gnats complete their life cycle in about three to four weeks at room temperature, so you need to treat long enough to interrupt at least two full generations. Don't stop treatment just because you see fewer adult flies — larvae may still be active in the soil.

Can I use hydrogen peroxide to kill fungus gnat larvae?

A diluted solution of one part 3% hydrogen peroxide to four parts water is often recommended, and it does kill larvae on contact through oxidation. It's a reasonable short-term option, but it also temporarily disrupts beneficial soil microbes and breaks down quickly, so it offers no lasting residual protection. Bti is generally considered more effective and gentler on overall soil health for sustained treatment.

My plant is wilting but the soil feels moist — could larvae be the cause?

Yes, this is a classic sign of significant larval root damage. When roots are chewed away, the plant can no longer absorb water efficiently even when moisture is present, causing the same symptoms as underwatering. Gently unpot the plant to inspect the roots. If they look sparse, brown, or stubby and you can spot white worms in the soil, larvae are almost certainly the culprit.

Will neem oil work against fungus gnat larvae?

Neem oil as a soil drench has some effect — the azadirachtin it contains acts as an insect growth regulator, disrupting larval development. However, neem can be inconsistent in potting mixes because it breaks down quickly and the active concentration is hard to control. Bti drenches are more reliably targeted specifically at larvae in the fly and mosquito family. Neem works better as a supplementary foliar spray to deter egg-laying adults on the soil surface.
