Crown Rot in Houseplants: Causes, Signs, and How to Save Your Plant

The base of your plant's stem turns soft, dark, and mushy right at soil level — a sign of crown rot that can kill a plant within days.

Crown rot is one of the most serious conditions a houseplant can develop. Unlike root rot, which starts underground and gives you some time to intervene, crown rot attacks the plant right at soil level — the narrow zone where stem meets soil. That spot is the highway for water and nutrients traveling between roots and leaves, so when fungal or bacterial pathogens destroy tissue there, the entire plant can collapse surprisingly fast. The culprit is almost always a combination of excess moisture sitting against the base of the stem and a pathogen — typically a water mold like Phytophthora or Pythium, or a fungus like Fusarium — that seizes the opportunity.

The good news is that early crown rot is survivable, especially on plants that root easily from cuttings. How do I tell the difference between crown rot and root rot?

Root rot is confined to the roots underground — the stem above soil looks normal until the damage is severe enough to cause wilting. Crown rot specifically attacks the stem tissue right at or just below the soil surface. The telltale sign is soft, discolored tissue exactly at soil level, often with a sour smell. My succulent's center rosette is turning mushy and brown. Is that crown rot?
