How to Use Cachepots Without Drowning Your Plants

A cachepot — the decorative outer container that holds a plain nursery pot — is one of the most popular ways to dress up a houseplant without committing to a permanent planting. The look is clean, the swap-out is easy, and you get to keep all those lovely glazed ceramics, woven baskets, and brass planters that don't have drainage holes. The catch is that water collects invisibly at the bottom, and roots sitting in that hidden puddle will rot before you ever notice anything is wrong.

The good news is that cachepots are completely safe to use once you understand one simple principle: the nursery pot must never sit in standing water. Because water cannot escape through the sides or bottom of the outer container, any excess that drains from the nursery pot collects at the bottom of the cachepot. Left there long enough, it creates a waterlogged environment at root level — the classic recipe for root rot.

This is different from a standard pot-and-saucer setup, where the saucer is shallow and visible, and you can easily see and tip out standing water. A cachepot can hold several inches of water completely out of sight.

Choosing the right cachepot size

Fit matters. The nursery pot should slip in and out of the cachepot easily, with no more than about an inch of extra width on each side. A cachepot that is much wider than the nursery pot leaves a large reservoir of airspace around the roots that retains humidity and pooled water in ways that are hard to monitor.

Height is equally important. Ideally the rim of the nursery pot sits level with or slightly above the rim of the cachepot, so you can see into the outer container and lift the inner pot without any awkward digging. Cleaning and maintaining your cachepot

Over time, mineral deposits from water and soil residue can build up on the interior walls of a cachepot, especially if it's ceramic or glass. Every time you repot the plant, wash the cachepot with warm water and a small amount of dish soap, rinse thoroughly, and let it dry completely before replacing the nursery pot.

For baskets or fabric cachepot covers, remove the nursery pot before watering every single time — these materials offer essentially zero water containment and will mold or rot if they stay damp. FAQ

Can I just leave my plant in the cachepot permanently and never take it out?

You can, but you should still check for standing water regularly. Lift the nursery pot at least once a week to look at the bottom of the cachepot and tip out any collected water. If you truly never want to remove the pot, make sure you water very sparingly and consider using a turkey baster or small syringe to remove any water you can see pooling at the bottom.

Is it safe to use a wicker or fabric basket as a cachepot?

Yes, but with extra caution. Baskets and fabric covers offer no water retention at all — water will seep right through — so you either need to line them with a heavy plastic liner, or always remove the nursery pot before watering.
