You notice odd little bumps on the underside of your plant's leaves — pale, water-soaked blisters, or rough corky patches that appeared out of nowhere. No bugs, no obvious disease. Why it happens: the root cause
Edema is fundamentally a supply-and-demand mismatch. When transpiration slows down — on a cloudy winter day, in a stuffy room, or near a drafty but dark window — water keeps flooding in from the roots faster than it can leave through the leaves.

How to tell edema apart from lookalikes
The two most common misdiagnoses are fungal leaf spots and pest damage. Fungal spots typically have yellowing or chlorotic halos, spread progressively from leaf to leaf, and may have a dusty, fuzzy, or water-stained appearance. Edema bumps don't spread from plant to plant, don't have yellowing halos, and won't respond to fungicide — because there's no fungus involved.
Spider mite damage creates a fine, stippled bronze or silver speckling across the leaf surface (primarily the top), and you'll find fine webbing and tiny moving dots with a magnifying glass. Edema is on the underside, corky in texture, and has no live organisms. Will the corky bumps on my plant's leaves go away on their own?
No — once leaf cells have burst and formed corky scar tissue, that damage is permanent in the affected leaf. The bumps won't smooth out or green up again. However, once you correct the watering and light conditions, all new growth should emerge clean and healthy. Many people choose to remove heavily scarred leaves to tidy up the plant's appearance, but it's not medically necessary.
Is edema the same as a fungal disease? Should I use fungicide?
No. Edema is a physiological response — a plumbing problem inside the plant — not an infection. There is no pathogen involved, so fungicide will have no effect. Applying fungicide won't hurt anything, but it won't help either. The fix is environmental: better light, less frequent watering, and improved air circulation.
