How to Make and Use a Moss Pole for Climbing Houseplants

Build a DIY moss pole, mount it correctly, and train climbing houseplants to grow upward for bigger leaves and a healthier root system.

Many popular houseplants — monsteras, pothos, philodendrons, and satin pothos among them — are natural climbers in the wild. They spend their lives scrambling up tree trunks, sending out aerial roots to grip rough bark and pull in moisture. When you give them a moss pole at home, you're mimicking that experience: the aerial roots anchor into the damp sphagnum moss, the plant stands tall instead of trailing sideways, and in many species you'll notice noticeably larger, more mature-looking leaves over time.

Understanding why dampness matters

Can I use a coco coir pole instead of sphagnum moss?

Yes. Coco coir totems are a popular ready-made alternative. They're tidier and less messy to handle than loose sphagnum, and aerial roots will attach to them. The trade-off is that coco coir dries out faster than sphagnum, so you may need to mist more frequently, especially in a dry home. Either material works well; it comes down to personal preference.

My plant's aerial roots are thick and stiff — will they really grow into the moss?

Yes, though it takes time. Thick, firm aerial roots have often hardened from exposure to dry air and won't flex easily. Don't try to force them into the moss; instead, pack a small wad of damp sphagnum around the root tip and secure it lightly with twine so the moss stays in contact. New root growth emerging from the tip will be softer and will grow into the pole on its own.

Do I need to remove the twine ties permanently?
