Overwatering is the most common houseplant mistake, but it's widely misunderstood. Here's what's actually happening in the soil — and how to stop it.

Ask most houseplant owners what kills more plants than anything else, and they'll say overwatering. They're right — but then ask them what overwatering actually means, and the explanation usually gets a little fuzzy. Most people think of it as simply giving a plant too much water at one time, so they start watering less, their plants stay thirsty, and nothing really improves. The real issue isn't volume. It's frequency.

Overwatering means keeping the soil wet for longer than your plant's roots can tolerate. Roots need both water and oxygen, and waterlogged soil cuts off the air supply. When roots can't breathe, they begin to break down — and once that process starts, the plant starts sending out distress signals that look surprisingly similar to underwatering.
