Soil Amendments for Houseplants: What to Add and Why It Matters

Perlite, bark, pumice, coco coir — soil amendments can transform how your houseplants grow. Here's what each one does and when to use it.

Most bagged potting mix isn't perfect straight out of the bag. It's formulated to work reasonably well for a wide range of plants, which means it's often too dense for aroids, too moisture-retentive for succulents, or too light for a top-heavy fiddle-leaf fig. That's where soil amendments come in — small additions that shift drainage, aeration, moisture retention, or structure in ways that make a real difference to a specific plant.

You don't need a shelf full of exotic ingredients. A handful of well-chosen amendments covers nearly every houseplant you're likely to own. This guide breaks down the most useful ones, explains what each actually does in the pot, and tells you which plants genuinely benefit from them.

Perlite: the workhorse of drainage

Perlite is the small white granules you've probably noticed floating to the top of potting mix after a heavy watering. It's expanded volcanic glass — extremely lightweight, pH neutral, and inert, meaning it adds no nutrients of its own. What it does do is create air pockets in the soil that prevent compaction and let excess water drain through quickly.

Adding perlite at around 20–30% of the total mix is one of the simplest ways to protect plants prone to root rot. Aroids like monstera, heartleaf philodendron, pothos, and alocasia all appreciate a chunkier, airier mix, and perlite is the easiest way to get there without completely rebuilding your soil.

For succulents and cacti — echeveria, haworthia, jade plant, bunny-ear cactus — you can push perlite up to 40–50% of the mix. These plants come from environments where water moves through the soil fast and roots sit in well-oxygenated ground almost immediately after rain. Standard potting mix holds far too much moisture for them.

Orchid bark and chunky additives: structure for roots that breathe

Orchid bark — usually fir bark or pine bark — adds large pore spaces that standard potting mix simply cannot provide. Unlike perlite, bark also holds a small amount of moisture on its surface, releasing it slowly, while still allowing the center of a pot to dry out between waterings. That balance is exactly what epiphytic and semi-epiphytic plants need.

Phalaenopsis orchids and staghorn ferns evolved growing on tree bark rather than in ground soil, so a mix of bark, perlite, and a small amount of coco coir makes far more sense for them than standard potting mix alone. Monsteras and other aroids also do well with bark mixed in — their roots in the wild wrap around organic debris rather than growing in dense earth.

Bark breaks down over time, which is one reason repotting matters. As it decomposes it loses structure, holds more moisture, and starts to behave more like ordinary soil. If your aroid mix has become dense and slow-draining after two or three years, degraded bark is often the reason.

Coco coir: moisture retention without the downsides of peat

Coco coir is made from the fibrous husk of coconuts and has become a popular alternative to peat moss. Like peat, it retains moisture well and improves the texture of sandy or very porous mixes. Unlike peat, it's a renewable byproduct of an existing industry rather than harvested from slow-forming bogs, which makes it a more sustainable choice.

Coco coir works well for moisture-loving plants like peace lily, boston fern, calathea orbifolia, prayer plant, and nerve plant — species that prefer soil that stays evenly moist but not waterlogged. On its own, coir can compact slightly over time, so it works best blended with perlite or bark rather than used as a standalone medium.

One practical note: coco coir bricks are highly compressed and expand dramatically when water is added. A single brick can yield many liters of material. Soak it fully before mixing, and break up any dry clumps — dry pockets of coir in a pot will repel water rather than absorb it, which defeats the purpose.

Sand, pumice, and grit: for the desert growers

Coarse horticultural sand or pumice is the amendment of choice when you're building a mix for true succulents, cacti, and other drought-adapted plants. Both improve drainage rapidly, and pumice in particular is excellent because its porous structure also holds a small amount of water and nutrients — just enough without staying wet.

It's important to use coarse horticultural or builder's sand, not fine playground sand. Fine sand fills pore spaces and can actually make drainage worse by creating a dense, concrete-like structure when it settles around soil particles. The goal is grit you can feel between your fingers.

Pumice is slightly heavier than perlite, which helps anchor plants with substantial root systems. String of pearls, jade plant, and aloe vera all do well in a mix that's roughly half potting soil and half pumice or coarse sand. Ponytail palm — technically a succulent despite its palm-like appearance — also appreciates a gritty, fast-draining mix.

Worm castings and compost: when you want to feed through the soil

Not every amendment is about drainage. Worm castings are a gentle, slow-release organic fertilizer that also improves soil structure and microbial life in the pot. A small amount — around 10–15% of the mix by volume — adds nutrients gradually without the risk of fertilizer burn that comes with applying synthetic fertilizers to dry or stressed roots.

Worm castings won't replace regular fertilizing for heavy feeders, but they're a good baseline enrichment for potting mixes you're building from scratch, particularly for plants like pothos, spider plant, chinese evergreen, or arrowhead plant that grow vigorously through spring and summer.

Compost works similarly but varies more in nutrient content and texture depending on its source. Bagged compost intended for containers is fine; homemade outdoor compost can carry unwanted pests or disease if not fully finished. How do I know if my soil is too dense for my plant?
