Somewhere around late October or November, a lot of houseplant owners start to worry. The snake plant that pushed out new leaves all spring hasn't done a thing in weeks. The pothos looks fine but feels stuck. The fiddle-leaf fig dropped a couple of leaves and seems to be holding its breath. Nothing looks dramatically wrong — things have just gone quiet. This is dormancy, or more accurately for most tropical houseplants, a period of significantly slowed growth triggered by shorter days and lower light levels.

Understanding this seasonal rhythm is one of the most practical things you can learn as a plant owner, because the instinct to fix a slowing plant — water it more, feed it, repot it — is often exactly the wrong move. Dormancy isn't a problem to solve. It's a cue to ease off and let your plant rest. What dormancy actually means for tropical houseplants

Most of the plants we keep indoors come from regions near the equator where seasons are defined more by wet and dry periods than by dramatic temperature swings. They don't have a biological instruction to go fully dormant the way a tulip bulb does.

What they do respond to is reduced light. As day length shortens from September through December in the northern hemisphere, the intensity and duration of natural light coming through your windows drops noticeably — often by 50 percent or more compared to midsummer. Photosynthesis slows. The plant produces less energy. And with less energy available, growth slows or stops entirely as the plant prioritizes maintaining what it already has.

A few houseplants do experience something closer to true dormancy. Cactus and succulents like echeveria and Christmas cactus have genuine rest periods tied to temperature and light. Bulb-forming plants and some tuberous tropicals can die back almost completely. But for the majority of popular foliage plants — pothos, philodendrons, ZZ plants, snake plants — 'dormancy' is really just a slowdown, not a shutdown.

A resting plant looks essentially healthy: leaves are firm, color is good, soil dries out slowly but not drastically. What's absent is new growth.
